STAAR Test (Texas) Explained
The STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) is the annual standardized test administered to students in grades 3 through 8 and in high school by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). It measures mastery of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) curriculum standards.
What Grades Take STAAR?
| Grade / Level | Subjects Tested |
|---|---|
| Grades 3–5 | Reading Language Arts, Math |
| Grade 5 | Also Science |
| Grades 6–8 | Reading Language Arts, Math |
| Grade 8 | Also Science, Social Studies |
| High School (EOC) | Algebra I, English I, English II, Biology, U.S. History |
High school tests are called End-of-Course (EOC) exams and are tied to specific courses rather than grade levels.
How Is STAAR Scored?
STAAR uses a scaled score system, and performance is reported in one of four categories:
| Performance Level | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Masters Grade Level | Strong command of grade-level content |
| Meets Grade Level | Sufficient command of grade-level content |
| Approaches Grade Level | Developing understanding; some gaps remain |
| Did Not Meet Grade Level | Limited understanding; significant gaps |
Grade Advancement and STAAR
Texas has a Student Success Initiative (SSI) that requires 3rd and 5th graders to demonstrate reading and math proficiency as a factor in grade advancement decisions. A student who scores “Did Not Meet Grade Level” may be required to attend a remediation program and retest before promotion is confirmed. However, the final decision on retention involves the parent and a grade placement committee — it is not automatic.
EOC Exams and High School Graduation
Texas high school students must take EOC exams in five subjects. Students who do not pass an EOC exam must retake it. Passing EOC exams is a graduation requirement, though students are given multiple opportunities to retest.
